Architects fear #2 cheap overseas CAD farms....

The Second fear architects have is outsourcing Measured Surveys and CAD drawings "What if the drawings are wrong?"

Cheap overseas CAD farms can do it for less but you fear that the drawings will be inaccurate?

You've probably heard the stories or experienced it yourself.

Cheap overseas CAD teams.

Hours spent marking up errors and correcting drawings that should have been right the first time.

  • Missing dimensions

  • Walls that don't line up

  • Windows in the wrong place

  • Disorganised layers

  • Or structural elements invented entirely!!

The drawings technically exist, but they're not reliable enough to design from.

At that point, outsourcing doesn't save time it creates more work.

And that's where many architects conclude that nobody will care as much as they do.

So they continue doing everything themselves.

Measuring... Drafting drawings... Working evenings and weekends.

Because it feels safer than trusting someone else.

"Many practice owners prefer doing the manual drawing and measuring themselves simply because it feels familiar, not because it's necessary, or adds value but because they choose safest road." - Peter Bauman

But here's the real question: Is the problem outsourcing, or is the problem poor-quality work?

Because they're not the same thing.

A good measured survey company doesn't simply sell drawings.

They sell certainty.

* Quality control processes

* Independent checks

* Experienced surveyors

* Experienced drafters

* Clear deliverables

* Professional indemnity insurance

* Accountability

The goal isn't to create another set of drawings for you to fix.

The goal is to deliver information you can confidently use for planning, building regulations, construction, and coordination.

Chriss an architect I work with told me:

"I was spending more time checking outsourced drawings than drawing them myself."

And the problem wasn't outsourcing. The problem was that he was buying on price instead of reliability.

When he switched to a supplier with proper quality control, everything changed.

Projects moved faster! Stress reduced! Confidence increased!

Most architects don't fear outsourcing, they fear losing control, and this what we discussed earlier (Full blog: Biggest Architect Fear)

And that's understandable.

But when the right systems, people, and checks are in place, outsourcing doesn't reduce quality. It increases it.

The goal isn't to find the cheapest person to draw your project.

The goal is to find a trusted partner who enables you to focus on architecture while they focus on capturing reality accurately.

The goal isn't to hand over responsibility.

The goal is to free yourself from repetitive technical work so you can focus on the work that only you can do:

* Design

* Client relationships

* Business development

* Leadership

* Growing your practice

I've seen architects grow from a one-person practice into a firm occupying multiple floors of an office building within a 10 years period.

I've also met architects who have done everything themselves for 40 years and intend to continue until they retire.

Neither path is right or wrong. But they lead to very different outcomes.

The question isn't whether you should grow your business.

The question is whether a bad experience in past has shaped a belief that is limiting your future and growth?

If you're looking for reliable partners to deliver you as-built drawings or 3D models of existing buildings at your desk ready for design.

Then reach out, we've got a hands-off surveying workflow that is literally giving architects days of their time back every month.

Thanks,

Peter Bauman
